A Brief History of SPiLL

The SPiLL Collective’s Deaf performing arts focus is inspired by Sweden’s National Deaf Touring theatre, Tyst Teater [Silent Theater]. SPiLL is currently the only Deaf theatre collective in Canada that operates and performs in four languages: French, English, American Sign Language (ASL) and la Langue des signes québécoise (LSQ).
Artistic Timeline

2009:

  • Paula traveled with Picasso PRO to visit Tyst Teater [Deaf Theater] in Sweden.
  • Yannick, Tiphaine and Paula meet to discuss the future of Deaf arts and the possibilities of Deaf theatre in Canada. The sign and intention of “SPiLL” was created.
  • Deaf and allied artists meet to further develop this intention. These notes became SPiLL’s vision and mission.
